Math & Physics for Technicl guys

Hi everybody!

In fact i’m learning and developing my math and physic knowlages beside of technical stuffs i’m doing!i thought to make this thread to show what we can do with Math in CG Apps,so every mounth/week i want to put something related to math and physic in CG world here, mostly 3D,reasearchs etc… and also i wanna ask you guys is there anybody to help me to keep this thread up and help each other with our math and physic knowlages??
i’m not so much expert in math and physic, but at least try to do my best here.you know all of us technical guys need to know math and physics.

I want to ask admins to make this Thread Sticky,if it’s possible.

Sounds good.

Bobo’s The Matrix Explained DVD is fantastic. I’d recommend it for any TA, regardless of language. You’ll learn more in those 5 hours than 50 days of your own struggling and hacking around trying to learn piecemeal.

I was able to do lots of scripting and shader-authoring with minimal math knowledge, but in the past half-year or so, I’ve had to do lots of heavy math stuff, and it has opened up huge new worlds. I’d be interested in helping as much as I can, and learning what I can’t help with.

Having a place to go for practical math questions is a good idea, especially without a programmer in the next room or on MSN messenger. Stickied.

I guess you are most interested in vectors, geometry and linear algebra?

In Fact what i could gather for most used mathematics in 3D are :
linear algebra, trigonometry, geometry, calculus and differential geometry, newton Physics!and probably some other issues that maybe mention to them in next levels.
and some websites here :

forum :

and i also recommend a very nice Website that explain 3D math, physics, etc… here : www.euclideanspace.com

thanks for your notice.:):

Do you have examples of how you would use math in your work?

I know I take it for granted when I choose random in our FXTool and it just works … but I’m wondering how you are applying math in your scripts/work/etc.?

I love this site…

Great little Flash app that you can use online or download to plot graphs. Helped me out many a time!

I find this place a bit cozy and interesting

www.euclideanspace.com was a huge help when I was getting up to speed with math and I still use it as reference resource!

fxPHD is also having a math class this term which I am pretty sure going to be very good.

http://www.khanacademy.org/ if you have not seen this, amazing video math instruction covering all areas.

Here’s some I’ve found extremely useful in the past, very basic but also very tech artist oriented.

Isner’s Guide to Thinking with Transforms and Matrices
Quaternions explained
Easing Equations

I concur with Rob’s view on Bobo’s the Matrix explained DVD it’s worth its weight in gold.

Taking the class right now and well explained as always from fxPHD

I haven’t watched any of the videos yet, but the sheer quantity is amazing. I love seeing people contribute to helping others in such monumental ways.

http://www.mathtutor.ac.uk/ , I’ve just watched a few of them but they seem good, the ones I saw were awsome. (Conic Sections)

Perhaps you know about the OCW project of MIT :
Great Mathematics courses of this project, specially the calculus ones :

Interesting, important and very useful posts here Ehsan.

Here is a really interesting old video clip from the dawn of CG !

I just read this article about matrices and quaternions. It was not bad written. http://www.gamedev.net/page/reference/index.html/_/reference/programming/math-and-physics/quaternions/the-matrix-and-quaternions-faq-r1691
Can be very useful for some people I guess.

A very short and handy reference for Matrix and Quaternions:

For example, if you ever need to rotate transform matrices: http://www.j3d.org/matrix_faq/matrfaq_latest.html#q28
