Rigging a hunched spine

I was wondering how people here approach spines that curve over or hunch. A straight spine won’t get good deformations, but curving the spine provides strange rotations of the torso to coincide with the joints’ orientation.

pics related - having a straight spine wouldn’t deform well, but the curved spine obviously affects how certain parts of the mesh rotate with it

Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Controls don’t have to be curved, rotation of spine control vs. local twist down the spine can be decoupled, you can flatten it out a little bit and move it slightly backward and throw a helper joint, or two in front of it to help with “abs” volume.
