MEL is a scripting language at the heart of Maya, and provides an easy way to extend the functionality of Maya. Everything you can do using Maya's graphical interface can be automated and extended using MEL. Additionally, understanding how MEL drives Maya "under the hood" can deepen your understanding of and expertise with Maya. MEL allows a user to perform complex tasks from bypassing the UI and access advanced features/options, to creating procedures and scripts for custom modeling, animation, dynamics, and rendering tasks.
